Painting
2ft x 2ft
“Fish Out of Water” is a still life painting of dead fish packed within a painted frame of dripping salmon flesh and fish eyes. I wanted to highlight the emotive aspects of dead fish in a grotesque manner, juxtaposing their flesh and scared eyes within the device of a frame. I used a more illustrative painting style for the frame to contrast the realism of the fish in the painting within. The layered presentation seeks to assign an expositional backstory to dead fish’s eyes: the fear of being trapped and being helpless at the whim of people.
