Installation (10 in. per face)
“I’ve Got a Fat Honker” is a series of multimedia self portraits in which I mechanically apply a fisheye effect on my face through acrylic domes. By exaggerating my nose, I bring attention to and directly confront my insecurities in a playful way. I deconstructed the different layers of the fisheye effect by manually drawing the product of distortion and placing the drawings as a the base image layer. The acrylic domes over the faces, inspired by antique diving helmets, emulates the optical illusion of the fisheye effect. By pairing a warped drawing of my face with the physical intervention of the dome,, I sought to change the lens in which I view myself and invite the audience to meet a hypothetical version of myself that doesn’t take self-image seriously.
