Installation
5ft x 4 ft
The installation “Arrested Development” features my father’s suits as a vessel to explore intergenerational socioeconomic status. I recontextualized my childhood with a heightened attention to my family’s socioeconomic status and fluctuating employment status.
I removed context from childhood photos by collaging and isolating family members to create discontinuity between the photos and I arranged the image fragments hanging onto one another and falling from the archetypal black suit of mass corporate culture. Through the precarious placement of the photos, I sought to juxtapose the unpredictable financial situation of my childhood against the stability promised in donning a suit.
In altering my father’s traditional suit with exposed seams, shoulder pads, and extended sleeves while adhering to the language of suits, I explored my inner turmoil over conformity for the sake of financial stability.
